Songs Of The Mountain State
(Grade 6)
A 12 minute chamber orchestra piece dedicated to folklore of West Virginia. This four movement work is continuous throughout and is greatly influenced by the music of Aaron Copland, and Charles Ives. The movements are:
I. Old Jimmy Johnson
II. John Hardy
IIl. My Home Among The Hills
IV. The West Virginia Farmer
Old Jimmy Johnson is a fiddle tune that is popular in West Virginia and the surrounding Appalachian area. It has seen many different versions.
The tune John Hardy is a song about a railroad worker in McDowell County, WV whom was found guilty of killing a man and eventfully found Jesus before he was executed.
My Home Among The Hills is used as the basis of the movement. The blending of harmony from different parts of the song entwines throughout.
The West Virginia Farmer was found in a folklore book by Patrick Gainer. The original lyrics tell the tale of farmer in West Virginia who has to till the rocky soil.

Perimeters

Movement 1: Circumference
This movement can almost be folded in half and is completely symmetrical. The performers perform the entire movement in reverse after they reach the center of the movement
Movement 2: Level
A movement with complete linear motion
Movement 3: Plumb
A movement with vertical expansion and contraction of the quintet
Movement 4: Square
An angular piece that is written using fourths and in a funky “square” style

Gunther’s Bop
Written to feature the French Horn with strings and percussion. Dedicated to composer Gunther Schuller and uses the tune “Boplicity” as its basis. The style of the piece is Third Stream, combining jazz and concert music.
